これを、発音するときは、 「クワンタス エアウェイズ」 ってなかんじです。 間違っても日本語でよくいう、「カンタス」とは言わないように! 実際に、ネイティブに "Which airline did you fly with?" ときかれ、" I used カンタス エアライン" と応える日本人。 それに対し、顔を赤らめたり、困った顔をしたり、もしくは爆笑するネイティブを 実際に何度も見ています。

DAVE`s Adventure ~Global Wanderer~"Hello", said Scraggly, in perfect British accent, smiling even morewidly than before. I had quickly named the two sardhu before me accordingto the main difference in their appearance; being their beards. Scragglyhad a short and wispy beard like a very old fur coat that even looked partialy burned. Despite this, Scraggly seemed the younger of the two whipthin holy men with clear, intellig widly than before. I had quickly named the two sardhu before me according
to the main difference in their appearance; being their beards. Scraggly
had a short and wispy beard like a very old fur coat that even looked
partialy burned. Despite this, Scraggly seemed the younger of the two whip
thin holy men with clear, intelligent eyes. Bushy, on the other hand, had
rhuemy eyes that seemed to see only into the far future or past, never
the present, and indeed he never uttered a word in all of our short
acquaintence. He did, however, have a great, luxurious beard like a
tremendous candy-floss had been glued to the bottom half of his face,
with strange, little crimson coloured ribbons seemingly tied at random
throughout.
"Hi!" I returned, standing awkwardly in the doorway, "Can I come in?"
"What country?" said Scraggly, ignoring oer not understanding me.
"Australia." I say, shuffling forward slowly, seeing if they were going
to object to my prescence. I thought Scragglies head was going to split
in two his grin became so wide. He pointed a bony, dark finger at the wall
next to the couch.
Hanging there was a bedraggled looking old tea-towel occupying pride of
place next to an Om postcard and Ganesh (the elephant God) in a
picture ripped from a newspaper. The dishcloth was a souvenir from
Sydney with a cartoon picture of the famous Sydney harbour bridge,
opera house, and harbour with pictures of koalas and kangaroos
wind surfing and sipping champagne on yachts in suits.
"You`ve been to Australia?" I asked, guessing that it was more likely
that it was a gift from a previous visitor. I was destined never to know
as this was the last occassion of verbal communication between us.
Bushy shifted his gaze from whatever universe he pondering to stare
fixedly at Hanuman in his shrine. He unfolded his chopstick legs and
shuffled over to the statue, turned to me and looked through me.
I went to him feeling like I had wandered into another magical and
mysterious world.
We both knelt before the statue of Hanuman in poses of respect.
Bushy lit an incense taper from one of the candles and I followed his
action. Quickly the small chamber was filled with the delicious odour
of sandalwood. I closed my eyes and said a brief prayer to whatever
strange powers there may be in the universe; thanking them for
the opportunity to witness such interesting experiences as this.
When Bushy and I returned to the centre of the temple chamber,
Scraggly, with his eternal smile had set up three small clay cups
and poured a measure of steaming chai into each. We sat silently
and sipped; relaxed in the ritual of company, myself enjoying the
mix of sweet and the bite of the spice in this very, very Indian
beverage.
I offered some tobbacco from my pouch and both sardhu gratefully
accepted a handful and proceeded to slowly, methodically roll a
cigarette. We smoked, and sipped chai, and sat quietly and listened
to the tinny Hindu music from the radio. Gradually I seemed to slip
into a light trance and I imagine my eyes must have resembled
Bushies in their dislocation.
When I came back to full awareness, I discovered that none of us
were sitting down any longer. At some point in my trance state
had stood and started a slow shuffling sort of dance that I immediately
understood was telling the intricate action filled story of the monkey
king, Hanuman. Slowly but surely our movements mimiced battle, court,
love scenes, and unearthly drama; our movements resembling jerky,
Hindu dancers, elbows and knees bent and spread, hands open and
moving in smooth circular motions.
Somewhat shocked at my involuntary actions I backed towards the
doorway exiting the temple, bowing thanks and waving my arms
around in weak, confused gestures of thanks and goodbye. My
last view of Scraggly and Bushy was as they continued their
dance/story without me; absorbed in their faith and respect for
their chosen god; Hanuman.
Turning through the beaded curtain and moving out of the temple
I blinked at the late-afternoon sun in my eyes and rubbed my face,
thinking and wondering at what had just happened.
What an experience!! I couldn`t explain how or why, but I had just
participated in an ancient ritual. It was great!
However, with sunset soon coming I had to get down off the
mountain before it became too cold..........
The adventutre is not over yet.... More next week!!

Hope you`ve gotten over your illness now. How was your Christmas? Did you have fun? Hope you did. As for me, it was great. All of the family gathered on Boxing Day to celebrate Christmas. I will talk a little about Australian Christmas here. Same as Japan, we cook a lot of food. We put all of the presents under the Christmas tree and open them when everyone gets together. Everyone waits for the moment, not only kids but also adults. It is summer here in Australia. So, in my family, we tend to have cold food for Christmas. Such as, Ham, fruits, salad, cold seafood ...etc. We usually eat on the terrace、the flies are so annoying. Adults enjoy drinking, too. Guess what? Here in Australia, We are allowed to drive after drinking alcohol. Of course, it is limited. You can only drink about one bottle of beer for one hour. But alcohol works differently for each person; so, we`ve gotta be careful. Better to not drink, anyway! We usually prepare a real christmas tree. It smells very beautiful. This time we`ve got an about 2m tall christmas tree. Hope you will be here to have Christmas with us next year.
Soon, 2007 will be finished. Was it good year? How will you spend the New Year in Japan?
Hope to hear from you soon.
love, Beth xxx
